What Happens at a Pregnancy Dating Scan?

Pregnancy and its associated medical checks and appointments can be both confusing and a little frightening as you are stumbling into the unknown. When you need to find out your estimated due date (EDD) and exactly how many weeks pregnant you are, then the very best way of doing so is via a pregnancy dating scan.

What is a dating scan?

This scan will confirm that you are pregnant as well as telling you exactly how many days pregnant you are. When we carry out a pregnancy dating scan we can also tell you your EDD.

The 2D dating scan

We are able to carry out a 2D dating scan as early as 7 weeks into your pregnancy. The scan will determine the number of babies, detect the heartbeat(s) and will allow you to see baby for the very first time. We carry out detailed measurements of the baby so that we can give you an accurate EDD. Sadly, sometimes no heartbeat can be found. We will tell you this information and will then write a referral to your local hospital.

What is included with the 2D dating scan?

As well as having the opportunity to see baby for the first time, we will also give you a full and detailed report as well as 2 X 2D black and white images for you to take home.

The cost for a weekday scan is £50.

The cost for weekends and Bank Holidays is £55.

What happens at a pregnancy dating scan?

We want you to feel relaxed before your visit, which we hope will be an enjoyable experience. When you attend your scan appointment with us you will firstly be welcomed by one of our friendly receptionists who will be Lynsey or Keeley. You will be asked to fill in a consent form and to choose your dating scan package. Once done you can then relax in the comfortable waiting room. One of us, Sharon, Nicky or Leigh, will take you for your dating scan. We also welcome family members into the scan room as we have an additional 5 seats that are all positioned towards the flat screen monitor so that everyone is able to see baby.

The scan

For the scan you will be asked to lie on an examination couch. A little gel lubricant will be applied to your abdomen and we will gently place the probe on your abdomen. We will then check baby's heartbeat and show you how baby is lying. Sometimes it can take a little while for baby to get into a position where we are able to get a good look for measurements and pictures. Therefore, we may ask you to have a walk around the scan room or to have a fizzy drink in order for baby to move into the correct position. If baby is still lying in a position that makes it difficult for us to get a good look for measurements and images, then we will reschedule another appointment completely free of charge!

After the scan

You will be able to choose 2 images from the scan to take home. Prints are in black and white. If you would like additional key-rings or framed pictures, then you can also select prints for these too.

We want you to feel relaxed during your scan. If you have any questions, then please feel free to give us a call or contact us via the website.
